MATERE

Founded in London by graphic designer and art director Jess Howard, Matere honours simplicity and functionality in stationery, creating high quality and thoughtful products with an uncompromising sustainability ethos.  Distinctive materials, quality craftsmanship and a considered minimalist aesthetic are at the heart of everything they create.

As an escape from the pace of life in a busy city, Jess found herself drawn to calming spaces, understated design, minimalism and conscious living.  While her life became more digitised, solace was found in off-screen experiences and purposeful interactions with the physical world became more important.  Her collection seeks to share this, drawing its inspiration from beautiful imagery, authentic materials and an understated sentiment.  Design choices variously reference architecture and interior design, graphic design, travel, nautre and the slow living philosophy.

Sustainability

The term Matere [ 'Mat-air'] refers to the essential matter or substance that something is composed of.  This underpins the level of thought inherent in Jess's material selection and the full product journey.  The idea that carefully considered style should not exist without equally scrutinised substance is highly valued in the process.

Strong environmental values are intrinsic throughout everything they do.  The full collection is produced in the UK minimising the distance products need to travel.  Their paper-based materials are sourced from proven FSC certified sustainable forestry.
